When Dad would go with me on the paper route, way back when, and Laura would come along, he would teach her about pot hounds and pot lickers. According to Dad there was a definite and distinct difference, and it had nothing to do with "pot". What a sad world it has come to when fun old words have taken on new and often unpleasant meanings. Never heard loblolly and I milked a lot of cows with Dad where my vocabulary was certainly enhanced. The term "bog clods" referred to the hard pan Penrose soil. Some of the words Dad used, I should mention, were my own inventions, which shall go unmentioned. Oh yes, skim milk was for calves and pigs, and if we drank it, it would make us pot-bellied, a belief I had for decades. "oats for the horse" was a deterrent to serving oat meal. Nicknames for neighbors were colorful, but out of respect, we will forego them.Dwighthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06174492647465668322noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4114307744147144762.post-82892140060674626532010-03-18T13:26:34.996-06:002010-03-18T13:26:34.996-06:00My guess is Grandpa's English background. My guess is Grandpa's English background.Steve Bloodhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14461084071883064196noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4114307744147144762.post-54822467788678207772010-03-18T10:12:01.889-06:002010-03-18T10:12:01.889-06:00Heaven help us.
