Telegram from the Past

I was doing some paper sorting tonight - the pile gets very high sometimes, and ran across the only telegram I ever got. It represents a drastic change in my life, because it meant that Dwight had obtained some jobs for me, and I would be able to go to UW instead of spending my days taking shorthand and transcribing it for the Welfare office in Cody. Thank you, Dwight, for looking out for me at a transition time in your life, too.

How were you notified of a telegram? Was it read to you over the phone and then delivered in the mail, or was it actually delivered to you by special delivery? Were you living in Cody? I have very little memory of when you left for Laramie, just fun memories of when you came home.

Thanks Liz. You were always my project. Love, D.

To answer Ann's questions - Mother read it to me over the phone, because I was living in the old Green Gables Inn (creepy), and eating downtown - working at the courthouse. I tendered my resignation at the Welfare Office, and Mother came to get me. Louise and I went with her down to Dwight's graduation from U of Wyo, and I stayed in Laramie. And, as for always being Dwight's project, that's very true - unfortunately, I've probably fallen far short of his expectations, but I do appreciate his helping hand through the years. Nice to have a big brother, even if he stole my doll buggy.

I think I do remember the excitement and going to Cody to pick you up. I thought the Green Gables Inn looked quite magical. Guess that was an illusion that comes from being very young. Besides, they had indoor plumbing. Aren't we luck to have brothers to take care of us? Hmmmm.
