Powell High School

Now, I read in the online pages of the PT that the "old" Powell High School is being torn down.  I remember in the early 1970's, when I went back to teach in Powell in Miss Harkins' English room in the REAL old high school, that this school was a state of the art high school, with wide halls, spacious rooms, etc.  Where did it all go wrong?  Has time really flown that fast?

My class was the first to graduate from that wonderful new high school. We were really proud of that fact. At that time, we had the "natatorium" (wherever did that name come from) across the street. The swimming pool was state of the art, and the auditorium with its wonderful stage and space for an improvised orchestra pit provided a great place for Mr. Wickstrom's drama productions. All of that put together, along with the gym,to the north, for basketball games and the dreaded PE classes created a neat, compact campus. The only problem was we were a little further from downtown and the quick escape to go buy a hamburger and a milk shake for .20 cents.
Somewhere I heard the "a" word (asbestos) as being one of the problems.
