Pansy Curtains

A couple of years earlier with a more reasonable pose.  Notice the pansey curtains and Elizabeth's graduation picture on top of the chest of drawers.  I think we each had one drawer??? Everything fit just fine, one of the blessings of not having too much.

Very nice! The pansy curtains were part of the do-over for the bedroom while Louise was still at home. The bed was painted green - it replaced the old iron bedstead that had been painted white, (the paint had been scratched into little roads and rivulets and other imaginary things by me when I was sick- I don't suppose that Louise ever did anything so unseemly.) Mother and Daddy tried to remodel the old bed because we dreamed of having a Hollywood-type bed. When that didn't work, Dad built the new bed, which Judy and Ann painted blue when they got it. Drawings hung on the wall above the bed, but weren't there when this picture was taken. Judy, you look so young and innocent! And hair up in pin curls.

What became of the pansy curtains? I loved those curtains. As I recall the bed was a surprise one day when we got home from school. Do I remember that right, Elizabeth? I do remember we were so elated to get rid of that iron bed. This new bed was pretty special.

You are right, Louise, but that was only because of the attempt to remodel the old iron bedstead. We thought we were pretty classy to have such a modern bedroom. The final touch were the sheers in the windows with the pansy curtains. We endured those for a while, but then opted for being able to see out of the windows in the daytime, or the stars at night.

The pansy curtains were falling apart when they were finally replaced.
I painted the bed and little cabinet blue and did the stenciling on the end of the bed. I drew the stencil off of an old card Mother had kept - my first experience with silhouettes. I think I painted everything the year Judy left for college. Is that right, Judy?

Yes. That is when the Victorian couple appeared at the foot of the bed.
