Welcome, Welcome Sabbath Morning

"Loving teachers kindly greet us as we meet in Sunday School, where they labor hard to teach us......." I do not have a year for this picture of Mother's Sunday School class, but it has to be in the late 50s. She taught this class faithly for many years consecutively. I believe it was 7. Have fun identifying who is who. When you enlarge it be sure to pull picture over from the left to get everybody..

OhMYGosh. Talk about ghosts from the past. This was after I was gone, but I still recognize over half of them. Now get to work and do the ID list! This is an amazing picture.

Wow! Isn't it funny how names come floating back after all these years? Because Mother's hair is still long, would this have been about 1954? I suspect if we all got together on this one, we could name 90% of the people.

Mother had her hair cut in the summer of 1955. I'm trying to remember the beautician who cut it. She was a member of the Church - Ann? Remember? She was so excited to be the one to cut it, put a perm in, and make Mother modern. I missed the knot, but the look was softer. I'm sure, in years to come, when she was working in the garden and it was flying every which way, she wondered why she had cut it.
Love this picture. Who was you bishopric?

Wasn't it Rela Jameson who cut Mother's hair? The Bishop would have either been Ivin or Fred Giles. Glen Lewis was after Fred, I think. Let's see what Judy and Steve remember.

PS I think it was Fern Zeigler who cut Mother's hair. I am going through the picture to see how many people I can name, and I think it was her - maybe!

I don't see Nina, but I think that "Shorty" is in this picture. Can you find him?

Ann, you're right - it was Fern Ziegler. She was Gwen Miller's sister? I remember that her hair was green when she cut Mother's hair. Mother taught the adult Sunday School class for 7 years. I'm in my 7th year - must be time to quit, right, Judy?

Okay, here's my list - Ann and Judy can do better, but maybe you'll fill in the blanks.
Back row: Mother, Bettina Graham, Mary Ellen Giles, Veda Terrill, ?,?,?, Glen Lewis, ? Ruby Hopkin, ?,?, ?.
Middle row: ?,?,___ George, ?,?,?, Bertha Cozzens, (behind her, __ Asay, and by Bertha, Julia Lynn, Faye Smith, Gwen Miller, Barbara Winkleman (Twinkletoes), ?, ?, Phyllis Taggart, ?.
Front row: Floyd Baird, Arley Goerge & Child, Orlin Terrill (behind Arley), Jay Partridge, Ivan Lynn with child, Serepta Asay, Burchell Hopkin, Mary Hopkin ___, Fred Hopkin, Louise Hawley, ?, Hal Taggart with child.
Okay, Judy, where is Shorty?

The challenge is on: Here is my list, but I have done it backwards from what Elizabeth did.
Men kneeling in front:
Floyd Baird, behind him is the mystery man - Shorty Meeks, in front is Wally George, behind him is Orlin Terrell, in front is Jay Partridge, Ivin Lynn (I think he is holding Heather), Serepta Asay, Burchell is in front holding the little girl in a bonnet, Mary Hopkin, Fred Hopkin, Louise Hawley, _______, I think he was the Sunday School President - don't ask me why?, Hal Taggart
Next row isn't really a row:
Fern Zeigler with the glasses, Mother is standing behind her, next to Mother is Bettina Graham, and behind her is Mary Helen Giles, In front of Mary Helen is Veda Terrell, in front of Bettina is? and to her right is ______ George, I don't know who the elderly man is , nor the woman standing right next to him. Then comes Marjorie Avery, and directly behind Marjorie is Glen Lewis Bertha Cozzens is in front of her - who could miss her great face, _____, Julia Lynn, behind her is a mystery, Faye Smith, Ruby Hopkin, Gwen Miller, Barbara Winkelman, people behind I don't recognize, next to Barbara Winkelman is _____ Dutton, then ??, Phyllis Taggart and? the man standing on Glen Lewis's right may be Mr. Avery

The lady at the extreme right next to Phyllis Taggart is Joe Tippits mother. (How could I forget?) Is the man behind Arley George, Gene Bloomfield? not Orlin T? and if so is the woman behind him holding the little girl, Sis. Bloomfield? The prominent elderly man is Verda Terrell's father. He came every summer and was very smitten with Mother's class.

We are sstill missing some male names on the back row. Same with the guy in front next to Hal.

I would say you have done very well.

Joe Tippet's mother - ah, you are right - that is one you wouldn't miss. I think you are right on the Bloomfields (I had forgotten about the hair style) and now I know why the elderly gentleman looks familiar. When I was "dating" Veda's nephew, who also came to Powell in the summers, they came to Shoshone Lodge to see me. Wasn't it Wally George, not Arley George? And is that Larry Jacob's house in the background?

Judy said...

OOOOOOO, Ann, now you have gone too far with the house identification.
Wally is the name, I'll buy that.
Now as to the dating thing......

Dwight said...

I thought it was Arley. And isn't it George Bloomfield? Gene doesn't sound right.
Elton Asay is in back row by Glen Lewis. And doesn't anyone have anything else to do?

I wanted to be the one to leave the 15th comment.

This is called true togetherness. Good night!

Elizabeth said...

That was a late leaving last night. Judy, it's Veda Terrill. And you are right, the woman holding the child behind Orlin Terrill is Julia Bloomfield. (Remember Daddy's rendition of the last name.) Bart Terrillis practicing dentistry in Olympia - he went to dental school with Steve Alexander. (Judy and Ann know who I'm talking about.) This has been a noble effort trying to put names to faces after all these years.

Bishops must have gone something like this - Ivin, then Glenn Lewis (he signed an award I received in 1954, and then Fred Giles - he signed an award I received in 1959.
